Nicholas John Vine Hall was born at Sydney, Australia, in 1944. He was the son of John Vine Hall and Barbara Roubel Case.

Nick was a recognised Australian authority in the fields of family history, genealogy and heraldry, and an enthusiastic champion of family history research in Australia.^[1] For his significant contributions he was awarded the status of Fellow of the Australian Society of Genealogists.^[2]

Gr. Gr. Grandson of Buxton Forbes Laurie (Artist) and Mary Small.

Eighth cousin to the famed navigator Captain James Cook and also descended from Edmund Blacket, the third colonial architect of NSW.

He passed away in 2006.^[3] His obituary is recorded in the Descent Magazine of the Society of Australian Genealogists.^[4]

• Suspect that his father is listed in registers as Douglas John Vine Hall.
• Name notes directly from Nicholas' widow: John Hall married Hannah Vine in the 1700’s and they gave it as a middle name, till Capt John Vine (Hall) 4 generations ago, changed it by Deed Poll, along with all 8 of his children. Since that time the surname has been Vine Hall.
